in hopes of not coming across as completely cheesy and obnoxious, i kind of wanted to write about my thoughts on seeing the vow.

the entire movie, i kept thinking about how our lives are comprised of moments. a series of moments that shape us and mold us into who we are.

the movie is about a girl who loses her memory, but only a span of five years, so she basically only remembers her life up until right before she made critical choices in her life, like quitting law school and enrolling in art school, and breaking off an engagement with a guy who she loved but knew in her gut she wasn't in love with. as sappy of a movie as it is, the real core of it is thought provoking. for me anyways. coming from someone whose life has been shaped and molded by the tiny moments that i chose to make my own, to live an extraordinary life, rather than a life that was alright.

had i never changed my major back in april of 2007, i wouldn't have experienced the series of small, (at the time) meaningless moments that have forever impacted me. i would have never watched a stupid youtube video with jennifer, chelsea, and ali in the design lab, which would then lead to the most valuable friendships i've ever had in my life. i would have never had that moment with phil and jivan, the moment of creative inspiration, that led to crave. i would have never experienced the joy it was to stand in front of a room full of best friends and mentors that became my family, presenting my work in an art gallery, explaining to them how much they mean to me. i would have never stood in front of a room full of students, sharing with them, realizing i wanted to be a professor one day. i would have never built the family of friendships i have now. the people that accept my anti-social, introverted tendencies, but try their best to force me out of those stupid habits because they love being around me so much. those friends are the beat of my heart. i guess you could say i romanticize life a bit too much, but when it unfolds so wonderfully around you, how can you not enjoy it for every tiny, special moment that it is made up of? life is beautiful.

there's a sense of overwhelming freedom you get out of spending a weekend away from phones and computer screens. last weekend was that weekend for me and my friends. the older i get the more i appreciate the people in my life. the people i can go on trips with and spend time away from the obnoxious parts of our lives, like work and bills and anything else.

i don't think my group of friends is a normal group of friends by any means. judging from how outsiders see us, i'd say we're a bunch of weirdos with one common goal, and that's to always have the best time together. whether that's sitting around doing absolutely nothing or dancing to the worst music you've ever heard in your life, we're going to be laughing the entire time, enjoying every little moment we can with each other until responsibility and maturity slap us in the face. i'm eternally grateful for my friends and i'll say it every day until i die. these people steal my heart every second i spend with them.

so, to jennifer, chelsea, jivan, phil, wes, valine, kat, andrew, seth, kacie, walker,mary lindsay, and ross...you guys were the best group to spend the weekend with!

i took these shots of cameron today, as part of a project he's working on. i'm pretty proud of the lighting and how they ultimately turned out. i can only attribute this success to the ring flash adaptor we have at work. it's sick.

we recently invested in a simple $50 shoe mount flash and a ring flash attachment (the ray flash) at work. they gave me an 8-hour day to become familiar with how to use it and experiment with its possibilities. these are the shots i'm most proud of from the other day. i'm falling in love with artificial light. and here i was thinking natural light photography was awesome. check it out. luckily, jivan was a willing enough model to put up with the countless tests. these shots turned out pretty sweet.

i think there are times in life when you genuinely need a break to stay sane. this past weekend, my best friends and i went on a road trip to kentucky to our friend's wedding. it was one of the most refreshing and hilarious weekends i've ever had. i haven't had that much fun since the last two weeks of college and honest to god, it was better because we didn't use our phones. the no phones rule was the best idea for us. we talked and laughed more than ever before and it was so cool for all of us genuinely be excited to spend 72 straight hours with each other. i'd do it again in a heartbeat. with those four people. 4-to-1 ratio.

i had this idea the other day, that since i'll be taking a road trip to kentucky from september 30th to october 2nd, i might as well make the most of that trip...and since i'll be with four of my best friends, we might as well take full advantage of our time together with no distractions. with that in mind, i had the idea of having a phone fast. in other words, we won't be able to text, facebook, or tweet from our phones. we'll only be able to use them in case of an emergency. i feel like this weekend could be enlightening or just fun all around because it'll be like the olden days when people didn't have the luxury of cell phones. two of my friends know of this plan so far and they think it's cool as well. i wonder what the other two will think...jivan? phil? my prediction is that phil will hate me for this. only because he's a texting fiend. anyways, i'm anxious to see how we handle this disconnect from the world as well as how better our lives may be during that weekend because of it. maybe we'll make even more lasting memories than those we made in college. who knows, all i know is that it's going to be like going to rehab. bring it on!

here's the thing. i've been moving recently and that's a majority of the reason i have not been tending to this beast of a blog. that's why there are archives. seriously, though. tomorrow i'll be starting a learning project with two of my coworkers. we're creating our own design briefs and critiquing each others work along the way during lunches and after work. this way, we can stay inspired and keep our minds fresh and free from the daily, sometimes, monotonous production work or email design.

our first project will be a DVD box set. we're bringing in a list of directors tomorrow and will draw from a hat. the director each of us chooses will be the director we must focus on to design this box set. out of spite, because they are much more intellectual when it comes to film, i chose a couple of directors out of left field. oh, and we're including michael bay because i made the mistake of thinking he directed inception. sorry christopher nolan...i was mistaken for a quick second and it made for a funny moment in the office. so, here's to a new personal project. thank god! if i can't be in school, i might as well pretend i am, right?

so, this past week or so, my brain has been very confused. it's been so used to the routine of early august for the last 18 years or so, that it can't accept the fact that i am never going back to school. i've literally had the strangest internal battle within my head that "school will be starting soon...no, WAIT, it's not!" or "by next week, i'll be working part time agan at work rather than full time...no, WAIT, no i won't...my job is permanent!" my brain literally does not know how to process this new routine. it's like it isn't sure how to be an adult. which, i can totally get because i did take the long track to getting my bachelor's degree. when august 17th rolls around and jivan leaves for school that morning, i'll be more in shock than i am now. maybe a good ol' fashioned sleepover with my fellow graduates would be the best kind of coping there is. luckily, i recorded our last two weeks of college and have that video to look forward to producing. that'll be the best healing there is, for sure. so, here's to never going back to school again and embracing the 9-5 like no other. i'm ready for it, even though my mind may not be. that statement was contradictory.

all i can say is that from my recent experience at work with a client of ours, i now understand why print production was such an important and invaluable class. i realized today that the swatches you package up in your indesign file are the swatches the printer is going to use when printing your job. this may seem like a "duh" kind of thing, but i kind of always skipped past the step when packaging my files when double checking swatches and what not. so, for the future, i will now remember this step and NOT ignore it, especially when using spot colors.

i rarely post things i do at work because usually the jobs are so rushed, i don't get to take full advantage of the design process, however, the longer i've worked in the "advertising" world, the faster my process has become and the more proud i am of pieces i make at work. i'm not typically a fan of grungy work, unless it was screenprinted or physically drug through the dirt, but i've been surprisingly happy with what i've been doing at work for one of our clients. it's only ads for their site, but eventually, if i keep making these, the entire site will graphically be designed by me, pretty much.

so, right now, it's the night before graduation. i've spent a ton of time with all of my best friends this week, laughing, screaming, interviewing, video-taping, reminiscing, talking, planning, etc. if there's one good thing graduation brings as of this moment, it's our sudden appreciation of every person in our lives. essentially, my group of friends has been hanging out nonstop since last friday because we know how valuable this time is with each other. however, i think kolby said it best yesterday when he mentioned how it will be sad that we aren't in the college atmosphere anymore, but at the same time, it'll be awesome to grow together in greenville, as we embark on an adventure known as adulthood. we've all been children up until now, taking advantage of the somewhat lack of responsibility that surrounds us from day to day besides being responsible for schoolwork. we've all grown as a community of friends, a family all with one goal in life, which is to never take it for granted.

yes, i am nervous about tomorrow. yes, i will probably cry my eyes out or it won't hit me until later. yes, i start my life on monday at 8:30am, with a full-time job. yes, i am thankful for that full-time job and the closer it gets, the more thankful and appreciative i am to be rushed to start my life, rather than being unemployed. yes, i am going to miss college. however, all of my friends have plans to remain in greenville after the summer, so that small fact is what is keeping me from coming completely unhinged.

the people in my life have no idea how valuable each and every one of them is to me. they have no idea how they saved me. they have no idea how when i hang out with them, i have the time of my life, even if it's just sitting around. my heart is fulfilled more than they will ever know, just for the fact of me knowing them. i can't imagine my life without them, and most of all, i'm thankful that they will remain in my life after graduation.

so, here's to adulthood. the scary parts. the awesome parts. the emotional parts. the weird parts. the responsible parts. here's to growing up and accepting the fact i can't be a child forever. and here's to having people around me who understand that just as much as i do.

i was informed the other day that my sister and i will be sharing my room at the house in greer. number one...it's small. number two...the closet is small. number three...my sister and i have A LOT of stuff. we could be on an episode of hoarders. the challenge for us both before summer rolls around? get a storage unit for all of our furniture and other crap and ONLY bring the essentials into my room. this is going to be an interesting summer. we also have plans to work out every day after work and stay busy to minimize as much as possible, the amount of time we are actually at home, in that tiny room. here's to graduation and moving home for three months to save up money to move out! august, GET HERE FAST! i'm also going to have to keep my room clean because i'll be living at home. the only downside of living with your parents. i'm not good at keeping my room clean, especially when it's a small room. exhibit a:

the most simple things in life mean the most. like, the little things my professors do for me because they know how much it will mean to me later on. once again, i love the AU art department and the people in it.

today, was also proof how teamwork can get a job done. everyone on the ivy leaves team stepped up big time to help get a majority of the work done. there was a lot of sitting around waiting to proofread, but having everyone there was the biggest help. thank you team! i can't wait for this publication to get sent out! it's going to be ballin' this year. philip belger is a boss!

i'm finished with my senior show boards. i've never felt so proud of myself. this body of work has been with me through my journey at anderson. some of it is from my early days and some of it is from this past month. i can't wait for march 30th. i am pretty nostalgic already though. i was standing in the lab this morning around 9 when no one else was in there. i had sent a job to the printer we all get so annoyed with all the time. the familiar sounds hit me like a ton of bricks and i almost got choked up about my last couple months at anderson, in that design lab, with the people that go in and out of that door every day. come graduation day, i'll probably be beside myself with tears. i've gotten so attached to the anderson university art department and the overwhelming support and community that exists there. getting lunch with my best friends. making videos late at night. laughing until i can't breath. those are things that happen so often at school and i won't have that after may. it's going to be a hard time, that's for sure.

this post is partly caused by the sentimental nature of my friends and partly because i haven't slept much in the past two days. you're welcome.

there is a list of things i've been jotting down mentally in my head that i want to have in my future house, after graduation. not sure if it could all be possible, but these are things that would add to my quality of life in many different ways.

an office area...included in that office would be:

27 inch imac...and if i'm feeling like a bigger investment is possible, a cinema display to go with that
a white backdrop, complete with necessary lighting (and a room long enough to accommodate portrait photography)
ikea desk setup, an addition to the desk i already have
a nice, sturdy tripod, as opposed to the $10 one i bought from wal-mart months ago

and in general:

frames for all of my prints and posters, so i don't look like i'm still a teenager when people visit
a LARGE closet where i can fit a laundry basket large enough for my obnoxious amount of clothes
knick knacks here and there, similar to the window hanging about the couch in my apartment right now
lots of lamps...i hate overhead lighting
a basement or garage...perfect for setting up a screenprinting space
a queen-sized bed with a real, grownup bed frame
a guest room for my friends to stay in
a little room for my future golden retriever, dawson

i know this list is impossible for someone who won't be making too much money, but i can dream...and i can always find ways to ghetto rig some of this stuff too.

we went shooting around spartanburg yesterday. got some good shots. i didn't feel as much on my game as usual. could have been because i had just gotten finished eating three doughnuts and had chugged a bottle of whole milk. yep. that's probably why. here are my favorites. i took a ton, but many weren't in focus. i'm still learning the tricky ways of my 1.8/50mm lens.
